Welcome to the Echochamber

Jon shows how pundits get their scripts DIRECTLY FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.  Kinda insane. Slide to 3:40.

America's economic recovery is good news, unless you work for a media organization whose job it is to make sure Barack Obama doesn't get re-elected.  LINKTO: http://bit.ly/zCM3DJ

"Their bias is toward sensationalism and laziness...not a liberal agenda...it's fluff..." -Jon Stewart on Chris Wallace interview; June 19 2011--all interview a great exercise in media criticism.

Lesson 1: The danger of closed information systems.
    • Too often, conservatives dupe themselves. They wrap themselves in closed information systems based upon pretend information. In this closed information system, banks can collapse without injuring the rest of the economy, tax cuts always pay for themselves and Congressional earmarks cause the federal budget deficit. ...Every day, Beck offers alternative knowledge phenomenon. — an alternative history of the United States and the world, an alternative system of economics, an alternative reality.
    • As corporate profits soar, the closed information system insists that the free-enterprise system is under assault. As prices slump, we are warned of imminent hyperinflation. As black Americans are crushed under Depression-level unemployment, the administration’s policies are  condemned by some conservatives as an outburst of Kenyan racial revenge against the white overlord.

  • The Real Problem with Fox News "conservative slant and essential inaccuracy" Columbia Journalism Review (3/2011)
    • 2 core problems with Fox’s supposedly “fair and balanced” news coverage. The first is the simple inaccuracy demonstrated by the blatant misrepresentation of Weiner’s position. The second is the bias of story selection. Why does a congressman from the minority party with no leadership position making a statement at a think thank event on a possible move by a locality warrant multiple news segments? Only because Fox can present it as a victory for conservative ideology.

  • Truthiness vs. Critical thinking: (feb 2007)
    • " attitudes that characterize critical thinkers, including questioning assumptions, discerning hidden biases, avoiding overgeneralizations, developing tolerance for ambiguity, and exploring alternative perspectives. Critical thinkers learn to digest and use data. They adapt and refit hypotheses in accord with that data rather than attempt to force the data to fit their pre-existing assumptions.

Socialism

    • The socialism question indeed “struck me as a far-fetched idea” in 2008. “I considered it kind of a remarkable notion that we would even be having the conversation.”
    • the bottom line here is that he doesn’t regret having spread an idea he personally found far-fetched, because so doing helped ensure that the far-fetched idea ultimately gained widespread acceptance. That’s a peculiar attitude for a “news” executive, isn’t it?
